Excerpt from Verses From the Harvard Advocate: Third Series, 1886-1906 This volume marks the fortieth year of the Harvard Advocate and is the fourth Advocate anthology. The first book of verse was published in 1876, the second in 1886. The third volume, issued in 1896, was a collection of stories. It is the hope of the editors, past and present, that at the end of each decade there may be an Advocate book. The verses in this volume are selected from the Advocate of the last twenty years. It is thought that they are not discreditable either to the writers or to Harvard. If there shines a spark of genius here and there, so much the better. But the verses need show little of the divine fore to be significant to Harvard men; for through the youthful numbers of the undergraduate the eye of affection may discern somewhat of the Harvard spirit. Excerpt from The Harvard Advocate, Vol. 66: October 17, 1898 The air had now become heavy and parched, and there was a stillness as of preparation for disaster. A few large drops of rain splashed hissing on the oily water and thumped on the dry boards of the wharf. A gust of cold, moist wind swirled past, whirling some bits of news paper far out from the wharf. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Harvard Advocate, Vol. 67 Here was a touch of the south, a breath of Italian softness in the air. Roofs and Spires won gentle contours against the mellow ing blue. The buds on the park trees were bursting into life. Tiny clouds of silver white sailed freshly up out of the south. The clamor of sparrows rang intermittently through the noises of the avenue.
