Wegen ihrer hohen Aussagekraft und Genauigkeit ist sie zu einem der wichtigsten Werkzeuge in der chemischen Grundlagenfor schung geworden, in der anorganischen wie der organischen Chemie. Obwohl die Kristallographie in der Ausbildung der Chemiestudenten noch immer eine sehr untergeordnete Rolle spielt, sind viele davon gehalten, während ihrer Diplom-oder Doktorarbeit diese Methode selbst einzusetzen oder zumindest ihre Ergebnisse kompetent zu verwerten. Die vielen und komplizierten Stufen einer Röntgenstrukturanalyse sind dank immer raffinierterer Programmsy steme tatsächlich zunehmend auch von kristallographisch weniger Geübten zu meistern. Eine solche Anwendung als "black box"-Methode birgt jedoch dann erhebliche Fehlerrisiken. Das vorliegende Buch richtet sich deshalb vorwiegend an fortgeschrittene Studenten der Chemie oder benachbarter Fächer, die einen Blick in den schwarzen Kasten tun wollen, bevor sie selbst auf diesem Gebiet tätig werden, oder die sich über Grundlagen, Leistungsfähigkeit und Risiken der Methode informieren wollen. Da erfahrungsgemäß die Bereitschaft, ein Buch wirklich zu lesen, umgekehrt proportional zur Seitenzahl ist, wurde versucht, die Behand lung der methodischen Grundlagen möglichst kurz und anschaulich zu halten. The radial structure function so obtained contains information on the number, distance to, and distribution of atoms surrounding the absorbing atom. The data on Ge and Ge02 generally agree with previous findings but with added detail. The environment of both Ge and Se in amorphous GeSe show a significant change from the crystalline material with evidence for local satisfaction of the directed bonding tendencies of each atomic species. The research of unitary concepts in solid state and molecular chemistry is of current interest for both chemist and physicist communities. It is clear that due to their relative simplicity, low dimensional materials have attracted most of the attention. Thus, many non-trivial problems were solved in chain systems, giving some insight into the behavior of real systems which would otherwise be untractable. The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Organic and Inorganic Low-Dimensional Crystalline Materials" was organized to review the most striking electronic properties exhibited by organic and inorganic sytems whose space dimensionality ranges from zero (Od) to one (1d), and to discuss related scientific and technological potentials. The initial objectives of this Workshop were, respectively: i) To research unitary concepts in solid state physics, in particular for one dimensional compounds, ii) To reinforce, through a close coupling between theory and experiment, the interplay between organic and inorganic chemistry, on the one hand, and solid state physics on the other, iii) To get a salient understanding of new low-dimensional materials showing "exotic" physical properties, in conjunction with structural features.
