Political Theory And International Relations

by Charles R. Beitz, Political Theory And International Relations Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Political Theory And International Relations book, In this revised edition of his 1979 classic Political Theory and International Relations, Charles Beitz rejects two highly influential conceptions of international theory as empirically inaccurate and theoretically misleading. In one, international relations is a Hobbesian state of nature in which moral judgments are entirely inappropriate, and in the other, states are analogous to persons in domestic society in having rights of autonomy that insulate them from external moral assessment and political interference. Beitz postulates that a theory of international politics should include a revised principle of state autonomy based on the justice of a state's domestic institutions, and a principle of international distributive justice to establish a fair division of resources and wealth among persons situated in diverse national societies.

The Anti Pelagian Imagination In Political Theory And International Relations

by Nicholas Rengger, The Anti Pelagian Imagination In Political Theory And International Relations Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download The Anti Pelagian Imagination In Political Theory And International Relations book, This volume draws together some of the key works of Nicholas Rengger, focusing on the theme of the 'anti-Pelagian imagination' in political theory and international relations. Rengger frames the collection with a detailed introduction that sketches out this 'imagination', its origins and character, and puts the chapters that follow into context with the work of other theorists, including Bull, Connolly, Gray, Strauss, Elshtain and Kant. The volume concludes with an epilogue contrasting two different ways of reading this sensibility and offering reasons for supposing one is preferable to the other. Updating and expanding on ideas from work over the course of the last sixteen years, this collection will be of great interest to students and scholars of international relations theory, political thought and political philosophy.

Before Anarchy

by Theodore Christov, Before Anarchy Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Before Anarchy book, How did the 'Hobbesian state of nature' and the 'discourse of anarchy' - separated by three centuries - come to be seen as virtually synonymous? Before Anarchy offers a novel account of Hobbes's interpersonal and international state of nature and rejects two dominant views. In one, international relations is a warlike Hobbesian anarchy, and in the other, state sovereignty eradicates the state of nature. In combining the contextualist method in the history of political thought and the historiographical method in international relations theory, Before Anarchy traces Hobbes's analogy between natural men and sovereign states and its reception by Pufendorf, Rousseau and Vattel in showing their intellectual convergence with Hobbes. Far from defending a 'realist' international theory, the leading political thinkers of early modernity were precursors of the most enlightened liberal theory of international society today. By demolishing twentieth-century anachronisms, Before Anarchy bridges the divide between political theory, international relations and intellectual history.

Narrative Global Politics

by Naeem Inayatullah, Narrative Global Politics Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Narrative Global Politics book, This volume harnesses the virtual explosion of narrative writing in contemporary academic international politics. It comprises a prologue, an epilogue, and sixteen chapters that both build upon and diversify the success of the 2011 volume Autobiographical International Relations. Here, as in that volume, academics place their narratives in the context of world politics, culture, and history. Contributors explore moments in their academic lives that are often inexpressible in the standard academic voice and which, in turn, require a different way of writing and knowing. They write in the belief that academic IR has already begun to benefit from a different kind of writing┬┐a stylae that retrieves the "I" and explicitly demonstrates its presence both within the world and within academic writing. By working within the overlap between theory, history, and autobiography, these chapters aim to increase the clarity, urgency, and meaningfulness of academic work. Highlighting the autoethnographic and autobiographic turn in critical international relations, this work will be of great interest to students and scholars in international relations, IR theory and global politics.

After The Enlightenment

by Nicolas Guilhot, After The Enlightenment Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download After The Enlightenment book, After the Enlightenment is the first attempt at understanding modern political realism as a historical phenomenon. Realism is not an eternal wisdom inherited from Thucydides, Machiavelli or Hobbes, but a twentieth-century phenomenon rooted in the interwar years, the collapse of the Weimar Republic, and the transfer of ideas between Continental Europe and the United States. The book provides the first intellectual history of the rise of realism in America, as it informed policy and academic circles after 1945. It breaks through the narrow confines of the discipline of international relations and resituates realism within the crisis of American liberalism. Realism provided a new framework for foreign policy thinking and transformed the nature of American democracy. This book sheds light on the emergence of 'rational choice' as a new paradigm for political decision-making and speaks to the current revival in realism in international affairs.

A Relational Theory Of World Politics

by Yaqing Qin, A Relational Theory Of World Politics Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download A Relational Theory Of World Politics book, Drawing on Chinese cultural and philosophical traditions, this book offers a ground breaking reinterpretation of world politics from Yaqing Qin, one of China's leading scholars of international relations. Qin has pioneered the study of constructivism in China and developed a variant of this approach, arguing that culture defined in terms of background knowledge nurtures social theory and enables theoretical innovation. Building upon this argument, this book presents the concept of 'relationality', shifting the focus from individual actors to the relations amongst actors. This ontology of relations examines the unfolding processes whereby relations create the identities of actors and provide motivations for their actions. Appealing to scholars of international relations theory, social theory and Chinese political thought, this exciting new concept will be of particular interest to those who are seeking to bridge Eastern and Western approaches for a truly global international relations project.

Christian Approaches To International Affairs

by Jodok Troy, Christian Approaches To International Affairs Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Christian Approaches To International Affairs book, The power and influence that religion and religious actors wield is often underestimated by political leaders and international relations theorists. This stems from a lack of application of traditional social science methodology to this area, a balance which this book seeks to redress, analysing religious issues and their intersection with international politics and international relations theory on a global scale. Jodok Troy illustrates the potential which theoretical approaches such as Realism and the English School have for a better understanding of religion in the context of politics. Furthermore, the book conveys how alternative theoretical approaches from philosophy, theology, and anthropology can help in the exploration of the growing impact of religion on revolutions, diplomacy, war and peace.
