Wrestling The Word

by Carolyn J. Sharp, Wrestling The Word Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Wrestling The Word book, "With this volume, Carolyn Sharp takes her stand as an exceptional `repairer of the breach' that many perceive between biblical scholarship and the life of faith. Her engaging, judicious, and balanced assessment of current issues in biblical scholarship coupled with her reflections about their significance for the church and the world promise to inspire and challenge every reader---lay reader and biblical scholar alike."---Christine Roy Yoder, Associate Professor of Old Testament, Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia "In this volume, Carolyn Sharp exposes the cultural and theological assumptions of the very act of reading the Bible. She calls on readers to see the different ways that scholars read the biblical text in this postmodern world and to experiment with these different ways to read. Students would be well served to wrestle with this book."---Beth LaNeel Tanner, Assistant Professor of Old Testament, New Brunswick Theological Seminary "This is a smart, brave, and bold book, and here is a teacher and writer whom I trust implicitly."---Brent A. Strawn, Associate Professor of Old Testament, Candler School of Theology, Emory University "This is no ordinary introduction to the Bible or to critical methods. Rather, Sharp engages us in a conversation about what it is to read the Bible in our various social, ecclesial, and ideological locations."---Ellen F. Davis, Amos Ragan Kearns Distinguished Professor of Bible and Practical Theology, Duke Divinity School

The Gender Of Racial Politics And Violence In America

by William F. Pinar, The Gender Of Racial Politics And Violence In America Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download The Gender Of Racial Politics And Violence In America book, Perhaps not since Gunnar Myrdal's 1944 classic An American Dilemma has a book appeared as synoptic and unsettling as The Gender of Racial Politics and Violence in America. Here William F. Pinar elucidates the great «American dilemma», that «peculiar» institution of racial subjugation, especially its gendered - and specifically «queer» - psychosexual dynamics. Explicating in detail two imprinting episodes in American racial history - lynching and prison rape - Pinar argues that the gender of racial politics and violence in America is in some fundamental sense «queer». This book will be of interest to students in education, cultural studies, African American studies, women's and gender studies, and history.

Theology Of The Old Testament

by Walter Brueggemann, Theology Of The Old Testament Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Theology Of The Old Testament book, In this powerful book, Walter Brueggemann moves the discussion of Old Testament theology beyond the dominant models of previous generations. Brueggemann focuses on the metaphor and imagery of the courtroom trial in order to regard the theological substance of the Old Testament as a series of claims asserted for Yahweh, the God of Israel. This provides a context that attends to pluralism in every dimension of the interpretive process and suggests links to the plurality of voices of our time.

Old Testament Prophets For Today

by Carolyn J. Sharp, Old Testament Prophets For Today Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Old Testament Prophets For Today book, The prophets of the Old Testament include such well-known characters as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, and Hosea. There are, however, many other prophets, both in the biblical books that bear their names and in the other histories and stories of ancient Israel. Carolyn Sharp offers a brief introduction to each of the Bible's prophets and their prophetic books, developing the theological themes present in each with an eye toward how the prophetic message is relevant today. The For Today series was designed to provide reliable and accessible resources for the study and real life application of important biblical texts, theological documents, and Christian practices. The emphasis of the series is not only on the realization and appreciation of what these subjects have meant in the past, but also on their value in the present--"for today." Thought-provoking questions are included at the end of each chapter, making the books ideal for personal study and group use.

The Charisma Machine

by Morgan G. Ames, The Charisma Machine Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download The Charisma Machine book, A fascinating examination of technological utopianism and its complicated consequences. In The Charisma Machine, Morgan Ames chronicles the life and legacy of the One Laptop per Child project and explains why—despite its failures—the same utopian visions that inspired OLPC still motivate other projects trying to use technology to “disrupt” education and development. Announced in 2005 by MIT Media Lab cofounder Nicholas Negroponte, One Laptop per Child promised to transform the lives of children across the Global South with a small, sturdy, and cheap laptop computer, powered by a hand crank. In reality, the project fell short in many ways—starting with the hand crank, which never materialized. Yet the project remained charismatic to many who were captivated by its claims of access to educational opportunities previously out of reach. Behind its promises, OLPC, like many technology projects that make similarly grand claims, had a fundamentally flawed vision of who the computer was made for and what role technology should play in learning. Drawing on fifty years of history and a seven-month study of a model OLPC project in Paraguay, Ames reveals that the laptops were not only frustrating to use, easy to break, and hard to repair, they were designed for “technically precocious boys”—idealized younger versions of the developers themselves—rather than the children who were actually using them. The Charisma Machine offers a cautionary tale about the allure of technology hype and the problems that result when utopian dreams drive technology development.
