Human Rights And Us Foreign Policy

by Jan Hancock, Human Rights And Us Foreign Policy Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Human Rights And Us Foreign Policy book, This book analyzes the role of human rights in the foreign policy of the George W. Bush Administrations. References to human rights, freedom and democracy became prominent explanations for post-9/11 foreign policy, yet human rights have been neither impartially nor universally integrated into decision-making. Jan Hancock addresses this apparent paradox by considering three distinct explanations. The first position holds that human rights form a constitutive foreign policy goal, the second that evident double standards refute the first perspective. This book seeks to progress beyond this familiar discussion by employing a Foucaultian method of discourse analysis to suggest a third explanation. Through this analysis, the author examines how a discourse of human rights has been artificially produced and implemented in the presentation of US foreign policy. This illuminating study builds on a wealth of primary source evidence from human rights organizations to document the contradictions between the claims and practice of human rights made by the Bush Administrations, as well as the political significance of denying this disjuncture. Human Rights and US Foreign Policy will be of interest to advanced students and researchers of US foreign policy, human rights, international relations and security studies.

Bait And Switch

by Julie A. Mertus, Bait And Switch Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Bait And Switch book, It has become routine for the U.S. government to invoke human rights to justify its foreign policy decisions and military ventures. But this human rights talk has not been supported by a human rights walk. Policymakers consistently apply a double standard for human rights norms: one the rest of the world must observe, but which the U.S. can safely ignore. Based on extensive interviews with leading foreign policymakers, military officials, and human rights advocates, Mertus tells the story of how America's attempts to promote human rights abroad have, paradoxically, undermined those rights in other countries. The second edition brings the story up to date, including new sections on the second half of the Bush administration and the Iraq War, and updates on Afghanistan. The first edition of Bait and Switch won the American Political Science Association's 2005 Best Book on Human Rights.

Human Rights And Us Foreign Policy

by Clair Apodaca, Human Rights And Us Foreign Policy Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Human Rights And Us Foreign Policy book, "Human Rights and US Foreign Policy provides a comprehensive historical overview and analysis of the complex and often vexing problem of understanding the formation of U.S. human rights policy. The proper place of human rights and fundamental freedoms in U.S. foreign policy has long been debated among scholars, politicians, and the American public. The history of United States human rights policy unfolds as a series of prevarications that are the result of presidential preferences, along with the conflict and cooperation among bureaucratic actors. Since the inception of U.S. human rights policy, presidents have attempted to tell only part of the truth or to reformulate the truth by redefining the meaning of the terms human rights, democracy, or torture, for example. In this way, human rights policy has been about prevarication. While Human Rights and US Foreign Policy is a key text for students, it will appeal to all readers who will find in a single volume a historically informed, argument driven, account of the erratic evolution of U.S. human rights policy since the Nixon administration"--

Human Rights And American Foreign Policy

by Alfred Glenn Mower, Human Rights And American Foreign Policy Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Human Rights And American Foreign Policy book, This important work provides a comparison of the human rights policies of the Carter and Reagan administrations, developed through a general survey of these policies, a reliance on extensive interviewing and congressional hearings, and four case studies. The book deals first with the background of the human rights foreign policies of the two administrations, their conceptual frameworks, rationales, systems of priorities, the objectives they sought, and the selection of national situations to which the policies were applied. The survey then proceeds to identify and describe the sources of the policies, both legal political, international treaties and agreements, national legislation, and the bureaucracy and Congress. It also examines actions taken to implement the policies and diplomatic pressures and inducements. The case studies describe and compare the approaches of the two administrations to the human rights situations in South Africa, Chile, South Korea, and the Soviet Union.

Principled Diplomacy

by Cathal J. Nolan, Principled Diplomacy Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Principled Diplomacy book, This new analysis of governing ideas in U.S. foreign policy shows how they arise, are sustained and challenged both domestically and internationally, and become part of the world order. By focusing on U.S. policy toward the former Soviet Union and the United Nations through the years, Cathal Nolan sharply defines the central problem in policymaking---how to support principles of national security and democratic and human rights. This history with its outlook for the future is an important new interpretation of U.S. foreign policymaking.

Human Rights And U S Foreign Policy In The Multilateral Development Banks

by Daniel B. Braaten, Human Rights And U S Foreign Policy In The Multilateral Development Banks Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Human Rights And U S Foreign Policy In The Multilateral Development Banks book, Promoting human rights is an important foreign policy goal for the United States. There are many foreign policy areas through which the U.S. promotes human rights including voting against countries which violate human rights in the Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs). Promoting human rights, however, is not the only foreign policy goal of the U.S. in the MDBs. The U.S. also seeks strategic goals such as supporting allies and promoting domestic economic prosperity as well in the MDBs. Realist international relations theory posits that strategic interests will trump promoting human rights in the MDBs. For the U.S. however liberal international relations theory argues that promoting human rights can be considered an equivalent foreign policy goal for countries such as the U.S. Therefore strategic interests will not automatically trump promoting human rights for the U.S. This dissertation seeks to answer two questions regarding human rights in U.S. foreign policy in the MDBs. First, what role do human rights play in determining U.S. votes in the MDBs? Here I find that a country's record on violating political rights is a significant factor in determining whether the U.S. will vote in favor of proposals for that country. A country's record on violating rights of personal integrity, however, is not a significant factor. Whether a country receives military aid from the U.S. and a country's GDP per capita are also significant determinants of U.S. votes in the MDBs. The second question this dissertation answers regarding human rights in U.S. foreign policy in the MDBs is what rights specifically does the U.S. promote in the MDBs and which countries, specifically, does the U.S. vote against because of their human rights record. Overall, I find that while the U.S. has voted against loans going to many countries for human rights purposes the bulk of U.S. attention is centered on countries that fail to apprehend war criminals within their borders, primarily Serbia, and voting against loans that go to China
