Bonded Labor

by Siddharth Kara, Bonded Labor Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Bonded Labor book, Siddharth KaraÕs Sex Trafficking has become a critical resource for its revelations into an unconscionable business, and its detailed analysis of the tradeÕs immense economic benefits and human cost. This volume is KaraÕs second, explosive study of slavery, this time focusing on the deeply entrenched and wholly unjust system of bonded labor. Drawing on eleven years of research in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, Kara delves into an ancient and ever-evolving mode of slavery that ensnares roughly six out of every ten slaves in the world and generates profits that exceeded $17.6 billion in 2011. In addition to providing a thorough economic, historical, and legal overview of bonded labor, Kara travels to the far reaches of South Asia, from cyclone-wracked southwestern Bangladesh to the Thar desert on the India-Pakistan border, to uncover the brutish realities of such industries as hand-woven-carpet making, tea and rice farming, construction, brick manufacture, and frozen-shrimp production. He describes the violent enslavement of millions of impoverished men, women, and children who toil in the production of numerous products at minimal cost to the global market. He also follows supply chains directly to Western consumers, vividly connecting regional bonded labor practices to the appetites of the world. KaraÕs pioneering analysis encompasses human trafficking, child labor, and global security, and he concludes with specific initiatives to eliminate the system of bonded labor from South Asia once and for all.

Download Is Bonded Labor Voluntary book, UN estimate that 20 million are held in bonded labor. Several economic analyses assert that bonded laborers accept these contracts voluntarily, which could imply that a ban would make such laborers worse off. We question the voluntariness of bonded labor, and present a mechanism that keeps workers trapped. With different types of landlords not revealed to the laborer, we show how some landlords manipulate contract terms so that the laborer becomes bonded. Enforcement mechanisms and the monopolistic market for credit thus play a joint role. Providing alternative sources of credit, offer proper conflict resolution institutions over labor-contract disputes and banning could emancipate bonded labor, which would make them better off.

Bonded Labour

by Sabine Damir-Geilsdorf, Bonded Labour Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Bonded Labour book, After slavery, forms of indentured labor met global capitalism's need for cheap, disposable labor. The famous "coolie trade" - mainly Asian laborers transferred to colonial Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas, as well as to the Arab world - was one of the largest migration movements in global history. Indentured contract workers are perhaps the most revealing example of bonded labor in the grey area between the poles of chattel slavery and `free' wage labor. This interdisciplinary volume addresses historically and regionally specific cases of unfree labor relations from the 18th century to the present day.

I Remember

by Das Maddimadugu, I Remember Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download I Remember book, With simple, heartbreaking detail, Das Maddimadugu recalls the joys and tragedies of his childhood in a destitute family of the untouchable caste, nearly sold into slavery, and "adopted" by a single Mennonite missionary woman. In her care, he was taught about Jesus' love and given the opportunity to discover his gifts for wide-ranging study, loyal friendship, community organizing, and dreaming redemption for those at the bottom of society's heap. The God "for whom nothing is impossible" used the moves of Das and Doris Maddimadugu's lives to weave together a network of friends in places like Vietnam; Newton, Kansas; Winnipeg; New Haven; Chicago; Korea; Taiwan; and Shanghai. This collaboration of friends has become an innovative partnership in Jesus' mission of "good news to the poor" for thousands of students, hundreds of orphans, a score of churches, and a series of disaster relief projects that have brought hope to the lives of countless persons on the margins, such as Das once was. On the wash line of his life story are hung colorful testimonies of a dozen mission partners in Asia and America that reflect on this innovative way of doing mission, following in the footsteps of indigenous leadership.
