by Ray Bradbury, Yestermorrow Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Yestermorrow book, The visionary science fiction author of Fahrenheit 451 shares his imaginative visions of the future in this collection of musings and memoirs. Combining a series of recollections alongside his personal contemplation about the future, protean master of storytelling Ray Bradbury outlines his thoughts on the state of the world—how the past and present are reflected in society, technology, art, literature, and popular culture—as well as the need for creative thinkers to be the architects of the future. In this extraordinary collection of essays, poetry, and philosophical reflection, readers glimpse inside the mind of one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated and prolific authors. Bradbury reveals the creative sparks that led to some of his most well-known and enthralling stories, along with the influences on his journey to becoming a prominent figure in modern literature. Part journal, part commentary, these writings are an exploration and celebration of a dreamer whose ideas had no bounds.

by Noel Harrower, Yestermorrow Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Yestermorrow book, INTRODUCING YESTERMORROWYestermorrow is a futuristic novel about human life on earth between the years 2055 and 2098. It concerns a group of families living in the UK as members of the climate transition movement founded in south Devon, who aim to live as sustainably as possible. In Part I, a young schoolteacher sets his class a project exploring the run-up to a tidal disaster, which happened in their area twenty-three years earlier, in 2030. The students discover that the damage being done to the planet was well understood at the time, but that those in power failed to be responsive enough to the numerous concerns. These students are shocked to realise that their generation is being left to deal with multiple problems relating to climate change, which have been made far worse by human activity. In Part 2, there are exchange visits between keen environmentalists living in south-west and central England who compare what is being done in cities to what is happening in the countryside. Anxieties run high between climate change refugees and those in wealthier places who still want to enjoy an exploitative way of life. Rory Whiteoak and his African fiancée, Amina, struggle with stern regulations threatening their marriage, against a backdrop of both race riots and positive multicultural activities. In Part 3, Rory, Amina and Beatrice have become schoolteachers themselves and also leaders in helping to build communities that are cooperative and resilient. Nations have woken up to the failures and are striving to build a positive world against a darkening background of hurricanes, snow blizzards and floods. Lessons learned in past years shine a light on possibilities for tomorrow, but tragedies have to be faced. In Part 4, there are new generations of children and grandchildren, and the journey continues as they face the dawn of a new century. Vision quests held in many parts of the world raise new hopes as people begin to rediscover some ancientpathways through the web of life on earth.

Learning By Building

by William J. Carpenter, Learning By Building Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Learning By Building book, Learning by Building challenges today’s architects and students to experience the energy and creativity of construction. Based on the example of famous architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, who considered construction an integral part of the design process, "design-build" is standard practice in growing numbers of today’s architecture firms. Architect and professor William J. Carpenter explores ways to integrate construction into architectural education, bridging the gap between theory and practice—between designing and building. Mr. Carpenter traces the history of construction in architectural education, from medieval times, to Jefferson’s Monticello, to the German Bauhaus. He cites twentieth-century artists such as Richard Serra and Donald Judd, whose work is generated by the process of making; like the artist, "the architect should be immersed in the potential of construction." Ten in-depth case studies of schools that have incorporated design-build into their curriculum illustrate how construction studios help future architects learn real-life pragmatics and collaboration. Through text and photographs, Mr. Carpenter recounts the diverse experiences of high-profile schools such as Cranbrook and Yale University, providing models for other schools that wish to include design-build in their curriculums. Mr. Carpenter also gives a helpful outline of the practical details involved in design-build, such as team issues, legal issues, and built applications of the process. Learning by Building is a wake-up call to architects and students alike to immerse themselves in the process of architecture—to rediscover, or witness for the first time, the excitement of building.

Timber Framing For The Rest Of Us

by Rob Roy, Timber Framing For The Rest Of Us Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Timber Framing For The Rest Of Us book, All those of us without traditional skills need to know to build with timber framing Many natural building methods rely upon the use of post and beam frame structures that are then in-filled with straw, cob, cordwood, or more conventional wall materials. But traditional timber framing employs the use of finely crafted jointing and wooden pegs, requiring a high degree of craftsmanship and training, as well as much time and expense. However, there is another way... Timber Framing for the Rest of Us describes the timber framing methods used by most contractors, farmers, and owner-builders, methods that use modern metal fasteners, special screws, and common sense building principles to accomplish the same goal in much less time. And while there are many good books on traditional timber framing, this is the first to describe in depth these more common fastening methods. The book includes everything an owner-builder needs to know about building strong and beautiful structural frames from heavy timbers, including: the historical background of timber framing crucial design and structural considerations procuring timbers-including different woods, and recycled materials foundations, roofs, and in-filling consdierations the common fasteners. A detailed case study of a timber frame project from start to finish completes this practical and comprehensive guide, along with a useful appendix of span tables and a bibliography. Highly illustrated, this book enables 'the rest of us' to build like the professionals and will appeal to owner-builders, contractors and architects alike.

The Perfect 100 000 House

by Karrie Jacobs, The Perfect 100 000 House Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download The Perfect 100 000 House book, A home of one’s own has always been a cornerstone of the American dream, fulfilling like nothing else the desire for comfort, financial security, independence, and with a little luck, even a touch of distinctive character, or even beauty. But what we have come to regard as almost a national birthright has recently begun to elude more and more prospective homebuyers. Where housing is concerned, affordable and well-crafted rarely exist together. Or do they? For years, founding editor-in-chief of Dwell magazine and noted architecture and design critic Karrie Jacobs had been confronting this question both professionally and personally. Finally, she decided to see for herself whether it was possible to build the home of her own dreams for a reasonable sum. The Perfect $100,000 House is the story of that quest, a search that takes her from a two-week crash course in housebuilding in Vermont to a road trip of some 14,000 miles. In the course of her journey Jacobs encounters a group of intrepid and visionary architects and builders working to revolutionize the way Americans thinks about homes, about construction techniques, and about the very idea of community. By her trip’s end Jacobs, has not only had a practical and sobering education in the economics, aesthetics, and politics of homebuilding, but has been spurred to challenge her own deeply held beliefs about what constitutes an ideal home. The Perfect $100,000 House is a compelling and inspiring demonstration that we can live in homes that are sensible, modest, and beautiful.
