Smile Now Cry Later

by Freddy Negrete, Smile Now Cry Later Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Smile Now Cry Later book, Pioneering black-and-gray tattoo artist Freddy Negrete was twelve years old and confined in the holding cell of a Los Angeles juvenile facility when an older teenager entered—covered in tattoos. Freddy was in awe, not just of the art, but of what it symbolized, and he wanted what this kid had: the potent sense of empowerment and belonging that came from joining a gang. The encounter drove Freddy to join the notorious gang La Sangra, and it didn't take long before he was a regular guest at LA County's juvenile detention facilities. By the age of twenty-one, Freddy had spent almost his whole life as a ward of the state in one form or the other. Enthralled by the black-and-gray tattoo style that in the 1970s was confined to the rebel culture of Chicano gangsters and criminals, Freddy started inking himself with hand-poked tattoos. Everyone wanted a piece of Freddy's black-and-gray style--gangbangers but also Hollywood starlets and film producers. In a riveting narrative that takes the reader from Freddy's days as a cholo gang member to evangelical preacher to Hollywood body art guru to addiction counselor, Smile Now, Cry Later is, ultimately, a testament to that spark within us all, that catalyst which gives us the strength to survive, transform, and transcend all that can destroy us. From the Hardcover edition.

Smile Now Cry Later

by Brisely Martinez Chavez, Smile Now Cry Later Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Smile Now Cry Later book, This life history case study will examine how an individual has navigated the impact of a civil gang injunction by analyzing his life through the use of testimonio. Further, it explores the impact a civil gang injunction has on the Latino male both as an individual, but also as part of his greater immediate group, namely those from the same neighborhood and on the same injunction. Additionally, it seeks to underscore the punitive nature of gang injunctions through a Critical Race Theory (CRT) lens, drawing close attention to how Latino males experience added forms of oppression and displacement through hyper-policing and how the injunction mirrors a 'carceral state'. Therefore, using an individual's life history case study I argue that the hyperpolicing inflicted by gang injunctions increase the added forms of oppression that Latino males already experience and ultimately extends the carceral state beyond the physical imprisonment of an institution into the outside world. Overall, contrary to prior research on civil gang injunctions, this research aims to put the participant at the forefront of the analysis by using his direct testimony and first-hand experiences.

Art Museums

by Christine Sylvester, Art Museums Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Art Museums book, Art/Museums takes the study of international relations to the art museum. It seeks to persuade those who study international relations to take art/museums seriously and museum studies to take up the insights of international relations. And it does so at a time when both international relations and art are said to be at an end-that is, out of control and beyond sight of their usual constituencies. The book focuses on the British Museum, the National Gallery of London, the Museum of Iraq, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Getty museums, the Guggenheim museums, and "museum" spaces instantly created by the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. The art includes works over which museums might struggle, acquire through questionable means, hoard and possibly lose, such as the Parthenon sculptures, Raphael's Madonna of the Pinks, the ancient art of Babylon, modern art, and the art/museum itself in an era of rapid museum expansion. Bringing art, museums, and international relations together draws on the art technique of collage, which combines disparate objects, themes, and time periods in one work to juxtapose unexpected elements, leaving the viewer to relate objects that are not where they are expected to be.

Homegirls In The Public Sphere

by Marie Miranda, Homegirls In The Public Sphere Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Homegirls In The Public Sphere book, Girls in gangs are usually treated as objects of public criticism and rejection. Seldom are they viewed as objects worthy of understanding and even more rarely are they allowed to be active subjects who craft their own public persona—which is what makes this work unique. In this book, Marie "Keta" Miranda presents the results of an ethnographic collaboration with Chicana gang members, in which they contest popular and academic representations of Chicana/o youth and also construct their own narratives of self identity through a documentary film, It's a Homie Thang! In telling the story of her research in the Fruitvale community of Oakland, California, Miranda honestly reveals how even a sympathetic ethnographer from the same ethnic group can objectify the subjects of her study. She recounts how her project evolved into a study of representation and its effects in the public sphere as the young women spoke out about how public images of their lives rarely come close to the reality. As Miranda describes how she listened to the gang members and collaborated in the production of their documentary, she sheds new light on the politics of representation and ethnography, on how inner city adolescent Chicanas present themselves to various publics, and on how Chicana gangs actually function.
