Reading Westworld

by Alex Goody, Reading Westworld Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Reading Westworld book, Reading Westworld is the first volume to explore the cultural, textual and theoretical significance of the hugely successful HBO TV series Westworld. The essays engage in a series of original enquiries into the central themes of the series including conceptions of the human and posthuman, American history, gaming, memory, surveillance, AI, feminism, imperialism, free will and contemporary capitalism. In its varied critical engagements with the genre, narratives and contexts of Westworld, this volume explores the show’s wider and deeper meanings and the questions it poses, as well considering how Westworld reflects on the ethical implications of artificial life and technological innovation for our own futurity. With critical essays that draw on the interdisciplinary strengths and productive intersections of media, cultural and literary studies, Reading Westworld seeks to respond to the show’s fundamental question; “Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality?” It will be of interest to students, academics and general readers seeking to engage with Westworld and the far-reaching questions it poses about our current engagements with technology.

Shakespeare S Serial Returns In Complex Tv

by Christina Wald, Shakespeare S Serial Returns In Complex Tv Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Shakespeare S Serial Returns In Complex Tv book, This book examines how Shakespeare’s plays resurface in current complex TV series. Its four case studies bring together The Tempest and the science fiction-Western Westworld, King Lear and the satirical dynastic drama of Succession, Hamlet and the legal thriller Black Earth Rising, as well as Coriolanus and the political thriller Homeland. The comparative readings ask what new insights the twenty-first-century remediations may grant us into Shakespeare’s texts and, vice versa, how Shakespearean returns help us understand topical concerns negotiated in the series, such as artificial intelligence, the safeguarding of democracy, terrorism, and postcolonial justice. This study also proposes that the dramaturgical seriality typical of complex TV allows insights into the seriality Shakespeare employed in structuring his plays. Discussing a broad spectrum of adaptational constellations and establishing key characteristics of the new adaptational aggregate of serial Shakespeare, it seeks to initiate a dialogue between Shakespeare studies, adaptation studies, and TV studies.

The American Robot

by Dustin A. Abnet, The American Robot Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download The American Robot book, Although they entered the world as pure science fiction, robots are now very much a fact of everyday life. Whether a space-age cyborg, a chess-playing automaton, or simply the smartphone in our pocket, robots have long been a symbol of the fraught and fearful relationship between ourselves and our creations. Though we tend to think of them as products of twentieth-century technology—the word “robot” itself dates to only 1921—as a concept, they have colored US society and culture for far longer, as Dustin A. Abnet shows to dazzling effect in The American Robot. In tracing the history of the idea of robots in US culture, Abnet draws on intellectual history, religion, literature, film, and television. He explores how robots and their many kin have not only conceptually connected but literally embodied some of the most critical questions in modern culture. He also investigates how the discourse around robots has reinforced social and economic inequalities, as well as fantasies of mass domination—chilling thoughts that the recent increase in job automation has done little to quell. The American Robot argues that the deep history of robots has abetted both the literal replacement of humans by machines and the figurative transformation of humans into machines, connecting advances in technology and capitalism to individual and societal change. Look beneath the fears that fracture our society, Abnet tells us, and you’re likely to find a robot lurking there.

Difficult Women On Television Drama

by Isabel C. Pinedo, Difficult Women On Television Drama Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Difficult Women On Television Drama book, Difficult Women on Television Drama analyses select case studies from international TV dramas to examine the unresolved feminist issues they raise or address: equal labor force participation, the demand for sexual pleasure and freedom, opposition to sexual and domestic violence, and the need for intersectional approaches. Drawing on examples from The Killing, Orange is the New Black, Big Little Lies, Wentworth, Outlander, Westworld, Being Mary Jane, Queen Sugar, Vida, and other television dramas with a focus on complex female characters, this book illustrates how female creative control in key production roles (direct authorship) together with industrial imperatives and a conducive cultural context (indirect authorship) are necessary to produce feminist texts. Placed within the larger context of a rise in feminist activism and political participation by women; the growing embrace of a feminist identity; and the ascendance of post-feminism, this book reconsiders the unfinished nature of feminist struggle(s) and suggests the need for a broader sweep of economic change. This book is a must-read for scholars of media and communication studies; television and film studies; cultural studies; American studies; sociology of gender and sexualities; women and gender studies; and international film, media and cinema studies.

Westworld

by Michael Chrichton, Westworld Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Westworld book, This is the original screenplay of Westworld as it was just two days before actual shooting began. Before this, there had been many cuts, changes, additions and deletions over a period of months. Much can be learned about actual film making from reading this book. It is to be suggested to read the Forward by Former Story Editor Saul David and the introduction by Michael Chrichton at least twice, once before downloading and seeing the original film and then afterwards. Now it is said Westworld was ahead of its time in depicting the dangers of computers and automated systems. Now we can realize that when the ro I am not sure that the author Michael Chrichton even realized what he had done here. He says that his goal was merely to provide "entertainment." We now understand that the robots in the movie are breaking down because of a virus or a bug in the system. The guests are paying and coming to Westworld to experience life as it was in the days of Pompeii before it was destroyed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, or the Medieval World of the 13th Century or the Wild West of the 1880s. Now we know the robots start breaking down or malfunctioning that they are being hit with a programming bug or by a computer virus. In this and many other respects this movie used new technology and did things that had never been been done before. The Medieval Queen who is a robot convinces the knight to fight a battle to the death with the Black Knight. She tells the knight he will win the battle because the Black Knight cannot see well from his left eye. It is a trap. The left eye has been repaired by the Technicians. So, the knight thinking he is sure to win is killed in real life by the Black Knight.

Reading The Decades

by John Sutherland, Reading The Decades Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Reading The Decades book, From literary classics to cookery books, blockbuster airport novels to self-help manuals, John Sutherland offers a portrait of Britain through the books that have inspired, excited and encouraged us to part with our cash. By exploring popular reading since 1945 Sutherland reveals a rich and compelling picture of the books themselves, the tremendous social changes and our responses to them. After the upheaval of World War II, Dr Eustace Chesser's ground-breaking sex manual Love without Fear reminded us how to make love not war; amid the austerity of food rationing, Elizabeth David wrote the first of her bestselling cookery books when most people could only dream of new foods and flavours. However, optimism soon turned to Cold War paranoia, which inspired John Wyndham to create his apocalyptic science fiction of the 1950s. Ian Fleming and John le Carr responded with their espionage thrillers of the 1960s and, in the 1980s, Peter Wright achieved notoriety with his all-too-factual Spycatcher. Occasionally, developments in publishing have themselves prompted social change. The acquittal of Lady Chatterley's Lover for obscenity in 1960 emancipated fiction in Britain, opening the way both for the 'bonkbuster'a novelists of the 1970s and 1980s and, in the 1990s, for the shocking realism of Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting. With media globalization, Stephen King's Carrie and Bronowski's The Ascent of Man became forerunners in a franchise industry embracing print, film and merchandise, continuing today with the enormous success of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. Lively, entertaining, and often humorous, Reading the Decades provides a unique view of the cultural and social history of the later twentieth century.
