The Development Of Second Language Proficiency

by Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, The Development Of Second Language Proficiency Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download The Development Of Second Language Proficiency book, This text presents the findings of a major investigation of second language proficiency in various groups of school-aged learners. It invites a frank appraisal of the research from an outside panel of experts. The theoretical and practical implications of the study are the subject of a lively debate focused on three main research issues: the nature of second language proficiency, the impact of classroom treatment on second language learning, and the role of social and individual factors in bilingual development. This original collection of articles will be of interest to all those concerned with policy and practice in second language education.

Diagnosing Foreign Language Proficiency

by J. Charles Alderson, Diagnosing Foreign Language Proficiency Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Diagnosing Foreign Language Proficiency book, This book addresses the need for tests that can diagnose the strengths and weaknesses in learners' developing foreign language proficiency. It presents the rationale for, and research surrounding, the development of DIALANG, a suite of internet-delivered diagnostic foreign language tests funded by the European Commission. The word 'diagnosis' is common in discussions in language education and applied linguistics, but very few truly diagnostic tests exist. However, the diagnosis of foreign language proficiency is central to helping learners make progress. This volume explores the nature of diagnostic testing, emphasizing the need for a better understanding of the nature of appropriate diagnosis. The book starts with a debate about how diagnostic testing might most appropriately be developed. Charles Alderson argues that the field has neglected to construct diagnostic tests, partly because other forms of testing have dominated the field. Alderson examines how proficiency has been diagnosed in the key areas of language: reading, listening, writing, grammar and vocabulary. The value of self-assessment is discussed and exemplified as a key component in developing learners', and teachers', awareness of the complexity of language learning. The book ends with a consideration of and recommendations for future developments in the diagnosis of foreign language proficiency.

by L.A. Arena, Language Proficiency Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Language Proficiency book, Louis A. Arena University of Delaware Newark, DE This monograph contains select, revised, and invited papers which deal with the topic, Language Proficiency: Defining, Teaching, and Testing. This topic was the theme of the eighth annual symposium held at the University of Delaware. The papers contained in this volume are invited papers or were originally scheduled for presentation and/or presented at the eighth annual Delaware Symposium on Language Studies. The papers combine research con ducted in the areas of teaching, testing, and defining second language pro ficiency within the profession of applied linguistics. They are divided into three principal sections: "Applied Linguistics and Language Pro ficiency", "Language Proficiency in Reading and Writing", and "Testing for Language Proficiency". In Part I, Paul Angelis' "Applied Linguistics: Realities and Projections re the Teaching Profession'; sketches a historical portrait of Applied Linguistics, its definition, presence, and role in the profession that teaches second language proficiency. Angelis concludes that Applied Linguistics is still a young discipline in terms of substance, organization, and strategy, and that these three components will determine the prospects for the future of applied linguistics re the teaching profession. The next six papers address the issue of second language proficiency from various points of view. Kensaku Yoshida's essay "Knowing vs Believing vs Feeling: Studies on Japanese Bilinguals" concludes that some Japanese bilinguals are actually not necessarily bilingual because they very often face problems requiring other kinds of proficiency, i. e.

by Vicki Nishioka, English Language Proficiency Levels Of Limited English Proficient Students In Idaho Summary Issues Answers Rel 2012 No 125 Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download English Language Proficiency Levels Of Limited English Proficient Students In Idaho Summary Issues Answers Rel 2012 No 125 book, This study describes the proficiency levels of limited English proficient (LEP) students and LEP student subgroups on the Idaho English Language Assessment (IELA). The report addresses two research questions: (1) What is the distribution of LEP students across proficiency levels on the total IELA scale and its five domains?; and (2) How does the distribution of proficiency levels differ across LEP student subgroups? Key findings include the following: (1) Most LEP students had an intermediate, early fluent, or fluent level of proficiency. Students at these levels can participate in classroom activities, although they still require support, particularly with the development of academic English; (2) In both kindergarten and grades 1-12 in 2010, the proficiency levels with the smallest percentage of LEP students was at the beginning or advanced beginning levels of proficiency (16.4 percent in kindergarten and 7.6-9.3 percent of students in grades 1-12); (3) In kindergarten, more than half (58 percent) of LEP students were at the early fluent or fluent proficiency level in 2010. More kindergarten LEP students were at the beginning level than at the advanced beginning level; (4) In grades 1-12, the largest percentage of LEP students was at the early fluent or fluent proficiency level, the second largest percentage at the intermediate level, the third largest percentage at the advanced beginning level, and the smallest percentage at the beginning level; (5) There were few differences in the proficiency levels of LEP students across the five IELA domains, with more than half of students at the early fluent/fluent level in each domain. In all grade spans except kindergarten (where the percentage was somewhat larger), fewer than 8 percent of students were at the beginning level in any domain. In elementary school, the writing domain had the largest percentage of students at the beginning level; in middle and high school, speaking had the largest percentage. The pattern of language proficiency for nearly all LEP student subgroups was similar to the pattern in the overall LEP population. Generally, the largest percentage of LEP students was at the early fluent or fluent proficiency level, and the smallest percentage was at the beginning level; and (6) Some LEP student subgroups had achievement patterns that differed from the pattern of the overall LEP student population. In each grade span, more female LEP students than male LEP students scored at the early fluent or fluent level. Except in kindergarten, students new to U.S. schools within the previous 12 months and students in special education had lower levels of English language proficiency than did other LEP student subgroups. The Construct Of Language Proficiency

by Ludo Verhoeven, The Construct Of Language Proficiency Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download The Construct Of Language Proficiency book, This books aims to open up new perspectives in the study of language proficiency by bringing together current research from different fields in psychology and linguistics. All contributions start out from empirical studies, which are then related to applications in language assessment. The book also serves as a survey of recent developments in psycholinguistic research in the Netherlands. The book starts out with a thorough introduction of international literature on models of language proficiency, language development and its assessment. Section 1 deals with first language proficiency and addresses such problems as grammar in early child language, grammatical proficiency and its (in)variance across a range of ages, reading abilities, and writing skills. Section 2 focuses on multilingual proficiency and deals with test bias in relation to the background of the second language learner, bilingual proficiency in ethnic minority children, the development of the second language learner lexicon, communicative competence of school-age children in the context of second language learning, the assessment of foreign language attrition and the dimensionality in oral foreign language proficiency.

Download Issues In Second Language Proficiency book, Benati provides clarity about the characteristics and notion of language proficiency in the field of second language acquisition. He looks at four areas of research paradigmatically related to the role of proficiency: theorizing and measuring second language proficiency; the dimensions of L2 proficiency; factors contributing to the attainment of L2 proficiency and attaining L2 proficiency in the classroom. It also contains a variety of research accounts about the specific factors which have an effect on proficiency together with a theorised measurement of proficiency in second language research. It will be required reading for researchers in applied linguistics and second language acquisition.

Language Proficiency In Native And Non Native Speakers

by Jan H. Hulstijn, Language Proficiency In Native And Non Native Speakers Books available in Docs, PDF, EPUB, Mobi, Textbook, Kindle Format. Download Language Proficiency In Native And Non Native Speakers book, This book, written for both seasoned and novice researchers, presents a theory of what is called Basic and Higher Language Cognition (BLC and HLC), a theory aimed at making some fundamental issues concerning first and second language learning and bilingualism (more) empirical. The first part of the book provides background for and explication of the theory as well as an agenda for future research, while the second part reports on selected studies of language proficiency in native speakers, as well as non-native speakers, and studies of the relationship between literacy in a first and second language. Conceptual and methodological problems in measuring language proficiency in research on second language acquisition and bilingualism are also discussed. Further, the notion of levels of language proficiency, as rendered by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), is critically examined, suggesting ways of empirically investigating a number of questions that the CEFR raises but is not capable of answering.
